Hello friends!

Today, I am handing the reigns over to my friend and fellow Palmetto Blogger Danielle from Secrets of a Sweet Southern Girl to discuss a cause that as women, we should all be aware of and support.

Hi Everyone! I’m Danielle and I blog over at Secrets of a Sweet Southern Girl. I’m so glad Aubrey has asked me guest post and talk to you guys about Sexual Assault Awareness Month and Denim Day! I work for a non-profit in Spartanburg, SC. April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month and this year we are running a campaign called Rock the Denim to get our community involved.

The Rock the Denim Campaign is a community fundraising and awareness effort that adopts the spirit of Denim Day.  In 1999 an Italian Supreme Court overturned the conviction of a 45 year old driving instructor for the rape of his 18 year old student. The reason cited was the girl’s clothing. It was determined that because she wore blue jeans the instructor could not have removed them without assistance, therefore she must have consented. People everywhere were outraged and within hours prominent women within the legal community were walking the courthouse in blue jeans to protest the decision. Since that time Denim Day in LA and the USA was born. Peace Over Violence, the agency behind Denim Day, centers this campaign around the fact that a woman’s choice of clothing is no excuse for rape.

The Event

On April 20th, 2013, we are presenting the Rock the Denim Concert Event in Barnet Park. This will be an evening of live music, children’s activities and denim displays from the community.  The live musical act will be JJ Dae, One Love, The Wheresville ProjectSound MedicineThe Consumers and Greenfield Excursion. We will also have children’s activities from 3:00pm – 7:00pm as well as food and drink vendors inside the park. We plan for this to be a time to celebrate our community and come together to take a stand against sexual violence.

How do you participate?

If you’re in the Upstate, come by the park on April 20th! Tickets are only $5 and children 6 and under are admitted free!

Participating in Denim Day is easy! Wear Blue Jeans on April 24th and talk to people about the story of Denim Day! Bloggers, take a picture wearing blue jeans and post about Sexual Assault Awareness on April 24th. Display the button in your post and link-up to show support! How awesome would it be if the blogosphere went red on Denim Day?

I would love for you to share this with your readers and spread the word before the 24th so that we have as many people as possible linking up! And if you’re in the Upstate I hope to see you on the 20th!
